“Told with humor, passion and insight
The Escape Artists is a memoir
snapping at the heels of the novel”
A family of four is thrown into the high-octane history that was communist Poland of the 1960s and ’70s. A visionary architect, a central-planning feminist economist and two little girls grapple with life in a logic-challenged system. Presented with a set of difficult options they choose a daring escape and emigration. A stealthy three-year plan takes them on a circuitous route that involves two refugee camps and political asylum amidst the artistic beauty and passion of Italy.
The Escape Artists is a reported memoir told from the point of view of a precocious nine-year old. It includes many family photos along with an epilogue of the family’s life in America. Incorporated is a researched exploration of the ideological, socioeconomic and cultural conditions of the time and their relevance to the present.
